History

The Russian Historical Society was founded in 1866 on the initiative of prominent national historians, military leaders and statesmen. The Articles of Association of the Company were adopted on May 23, 1866 approved by Emperor Alexander II, who, by approving the Society’s activity, contributed to the development of civic and legal education in Russia. The company was placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Public Education. At November 24, 1873, the Russian Historical Society was renamed the Imperial Russian Historical Society. The emblem of the company was an image of the Moscow monument to the citizen Minin and Prince Pozharsky.

The main activity of the Russian Historical Society was the collection, processing and dissemination of materials on the history of the Fatherland. The members of the Society actively cooperated with the community of scholars as well as with private researchers. The materials selected by the Society were published in the Collected Works of the Imperial Russian Historical Society, of which 148 volumes have been published in the last 50 years. Most of the material is still current. After the 1917 revolution, the Imperial Russian Historical Society was banned.

At the beginning of the 1990s, attempts were made to revive the company. With the establishment of the Russian Historical Society in 2012, the continuity of the traditions of the Imperial Russian Historical Society for the formation of an all-Russian historical culture based on the objective study of national and world history and the preservation of national memory was restored.

The aim of the Russian Historical Society is to develop Russian historical science and to promote historical knowledge.
