Smolensk – an ancient Russian city – was first mentioned in the Ustyuzhsky Chronicle in 862. One of the most remarkable fortifications and architectural monuments of the city is the Smolensk fortress wall with towers from the 16. and 17th century, built by Prince Vladimir Svitoslavich at the end of the 10th century as a defense against the Pechenegs. In the 12th century, Smolensk was the center of an independent principality.
