Krugerrand – Mintage Figures

Krugerrand mintage figures – collector researches mintage figures on RareCoin.Store
Krugerrand mintage figures and mintage numbers by year. AI-generated illustration.

The Krugerrand has been minted since 1967. What began with the well-known 1-oz gold coin has developed over the decades into an extensive series with regular bullion issues, proof issues, fractionals, sets, anniversary and special editions. As a special anniversary edition, a 1 oz platinum Krugerrand in proof finish was also released in 2017.

This overview lists the known mintage figures chronologically by year. The first section includes proof issues and numismatically relevant special issues. A separate bullion table supplements the regular gold issues by year and weight.

The column “Quantity” is intentionally labelled as such. Depending on the year and source, this can refer to the proof print run, the actual number sold, the declared quantity, the number of certificates, a maximum issue limit, or the number of complete sets for proof and special editions. Where these distinctions are known, they are noted directly in the table.

To classify individual issues, information from the South African Mint , Hern’s Handbook, and supplementary comparative sources were consulted. For bullion issues, a further distinction is made between year-specific mintage figures and pure sales figures.

The linked years lead to the corresponding Krugerrand issues on RareCoin.Store. For individual coins, where applicable, the search is also filtered by fine weight.

A special feature of the 1968 coin: The total proof mintage of 10,000 coins is divided into two different versions. Hern’s lists 8,956 specimens as “Reverse Frosted” and a further 1,044 as “Frosted Both Sides”. These variants are therefore listed separately.

Krugerrand mintage figures for bullion issues by year

The following table shows the documented mintage figures for regular gold bullion issues by year and weight. Proof issues, GRC issues, special issues, and sets are not included here. They are already listed in the chronological overview above.

When dealing with bullion figures, a distinction must be made between minting and sales. The South African Mint explicitly points out that sales statistics from the Rand Refinery record sales for a calendar year, without taking into account the date printed on the coin. Therefore, for this table, we primarily use year-specific minting or striking data.

Why do the quantity figures differ?

Collectors encounter various types of quantity indications for Krugerrand issues. These figures are not automatically comparable.

Proof mintage: The documented number of coins for a specific Proof issue.

Bullion mintage: The documented number of units of a regular gold bullion issue of a particular year and denomination. Pure sales figures are considered separately.

Sold: The number of coins or sets that, according to the South African Mint, have actually been sold.

Limit: The maximum planned production quantity. A limit does not automatically mean that this many copies were actually produced or sold.

Declared: A quantity explicitly stated by the South African Mint.

Certificate quantity: The number of certificates intended for a given issue. The difference is particularly noticeable in the 2017 anniversary editions, where the certificate quantity and the declared number of units differ for several sizes.

Sets: The number given refers to complete sets. Coins from sets may already be included in published totals and therefore should not be added separately.

Certificates and original packaging

Since 1995, official certificates from the South African Mint have been included with Krugerrand Proof coins. Therefore, the absence of an official South African Mint certificate on older issues does not necessarily indicate that the original presentation is incomplete. We explain this further in our collector’s question : Since when have official certificates been issued for Krugerrands?

In 2017, the newer brown wooden box, familiar from many later Krugerrand proof single coins, was used for the first time.

What does GRC mean in the context of the Krugerrand?

GRC stands for Gold Reef City . Between 1987 and 1991, Krugerrand coins with a GRC mark were minted there.

The coins correspond to the Krugerrand in their basic specifications, but differ by this additional distinguishing feature. The overview lists the main issues. Individual sub-variants described in specialist literature are omitted if their mintage figures cannot be reliably determined.

Mintmark or Privy Mark

In official documents and specialist literature, the terms Mintmark , Privy Mark or sometimes both terms are used for various Krugerrand special editions.

The usage is not entirely consistent across the different years. Therefore, in this overview, we have refrained from assigning a general category to the issue names and instead refer to the respective occasion or theme of the special edition, for example, Sabi Sabi, Coin World, Churchill, Armistice Day, or Oom Paul.

Why can bullion mintage figures differ from other tables?

Not every published figure describes the same thing. The South African Mint points out that Rand Refinery sales statistics are recorded by calendar year, without taking into account the date printed on the coin. Therefore, such sales figures may differ from year-specific mintage figures.

For this overview, we primarily use year-specific mintage or minting information for bullion issues. Sales figures are not automatically taken as the mintage for a particular coin year.

Why are some details or years missing?

For some Krugerrand issues, the information in tables, older publications, or different sources differs. This is particularly true when mintage figures, sales figures, limits, or set quantities cannot be clearly distinguished from one another.

In such cases, we deliberately refrain from providing a seemingly exact number. A single entry or even an entire line is only included if the quantity can be clearly determined using a reliable and comparable source.

Despite careful research, this overview may contain gaps or discrepancies due to the large number of years, sizes, sets, and special editions. If you notice a missing issue or have reliable evidence of a different quantity, please let us know via our contact form .

Photos of original certificates, original packaging, or verifiable information from contemporary or official sources are particularly helpful.

Specialist and Comparison Sources

For historical variants, special issues and cases where information from the South African Mint cannot be clearly separated or assigned, Hern’s Handbook on South African Coins & Patterns 2025/26 was additionally consulted. Numista was used selectively to cross-check individual years and variants. Where information differs, current information from the South African Mint and the specialist literature evaluated for this overview take precedence.

Note on the Data Basis

This overview is an independently compiled editorial overview of Krugerrand issues. The selection, table structure, classification of data types and assignment of individual issues were created specifically for this page.

The information was compiled from the sources listed above and, where possible, cross-checked. Where sources use differing mintage figures, terminology or classifications, this is explained in the overview or the relevant entry is intentionally left blank.

All information is provided without guarantee. Despite careful review, historical data may be added to or corrected later.
