A self-portrait by Vasily Surikov, below which are fragments of his painting “Boyarnia (Noblewoman) Morozova” (from left to right: a church dome, a running boy, Boyarnia Morozova in a sleigh, a wandering woman, and a man of God), below which are a palette with brushes and the facsimile signature of the painter. The inscription at the top edge reads “РОССИЯ И МИРОВАЯ КУЛЬТУРА” (RUSSIA AND WORLD CULTURE).

Vasily Ivanovich Surikov (24. (12.) January 1848 – March 19 (6), 1916 – a Russian history painter and itinerant artist (member of the Society for Traveling Exhibitions). His monumental paintings, such as “The Morning of Strelitzi’s Execution,” “Boyarin Morozova,” “Yermak’s Conquest of Siberia,” and “Suvorov and His Army Crossing the Alps,” are polyphonic masterpieces, intense in color and content. He also created portraits and landscape watercolors.
