In the center of the coin, within a circle of dots, is the emblem of the Bank of Russia (a double-headed eagle with downward-pointing wings); below it, on the left, are details of the precious metal and its fineness, in the center the mint mark, and on the right the fine metal content; around the edge are semicircular inscriptions separated by two double diamonds, at the top the denomination and the year of issue: “3 РУБЛЯ 1992” (3 RUBLES 1992), at the bottom: “БАНК РОССИИ” (BANK OF RUSSIA).

Back:
In the center of the coin – a relief image of the premises of the Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg, above it – the inscription: “SANKTE-PETERBURG” (SAINT PETERSBURG), in front of the building on the smooth water surface – a sailing ship, a rowing ship and a boat, along the edge – semicircular inscriptions, above them: “THE AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT. THE 18TH CENTURY” (THE AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT. THE 18TH CENTURY), below them: “THE ACADEMY OF SCIENCE” (THE ACADEMY OF SCIENCE).

Information:
The Russian Academy of Sciences was founded by Peter the Great in 1724. Initially housed in various buildings in Saint Petersburg, it moved in 1789 to premises specially designed for it by the architect G. Quarenghi in the Late Classical style. The first full members of the Academy were M.V. Lomonosov, L. Eiler, V.Ya. Struve, A.K. Vostokov, P.L. Chebyshev, A.M. Butlerov, S.M. Solovyov, B.P. Pavlov, and others. Foreign members included Voltaire, D. Diderot, E. Kant, V.I. Goethe, C. Darwin, M. Planck, and B. Paskal.
