Information:
The Smolny Institute, built between 1806 and 1808 by the architect Giacomo Quarenghi, was Russia’s first secondary education institution for daughters of the nobility (aged 6 to 18). As a privileged institution, it was founded in St. Petersburg under the name “Educational Society for Noblewomen” and opened under the auspices of the Smolny Convent of the Resurrection (built in the 17th century by the architect Varfolomei Rastrelli and completed in the 20th century by the architect Vasily Stasov).
