Information:
The Smolny Institute, built in 1806-1808 by the architect Giacomo Quarenghi, was Russia’s first secondary educational institution for daughters of noblemen (aged 6 to 18). As a privileged institution, it was founded in St. Petersburg under the name “Teaching Society for Girls of Nobility” and opened under the patronage of the Resurrection Smolny Nunnery (built in the 17th century by the architect Varfolomei Rastrelli and completed in the 20th century by the architect Vasily Stasov).
