The State Russian Museum (until 1917 the Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III) was opened on March 7 (19), 1898, in the Mikhailovsky Palace. Today, the museum’s architectural complex comprises remarkable monuments of 18th- and 19th-century Russian architecture: the Mikhailovsky Palace (architect: K. Rossi), the Stroganov Palace (architect: B. Rastrelli), the Marble Palace (architect: A. Rinaldi), and the Engineer’s Palace (architects: V.I. Bazhenov and V. Brenna). The museum is of international importance. It possesses the largest and most comprehensive collection of works of Russian fine art, comprising approximately 400,000 exhibits and covering all historical periods and movements that represent the development of Russian art over a thousand years, from the 10th to the 20th century.
