A special highlight – the gold coin Krugerrand 1997 Sabi Sabi

Krugerrand 1997 Sabi Sabi

The gold coin Krugerrand 1997 Sabi Sabi ( only 72 pieces ) is a special edition of the iconic South African Krugerrand, one of the best known and most traded gold collector coins in the world. Like all other Krugerrands, the coin was minted by the SA Mint . The edition with the Privy Mark “SS” = Sabi Sabi was minted to commemorate the Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, a world-renowned reserve in South Africa that offers some of the continent’s most spectacular wildlife experiences. Sabi Sabi is known for its “Big Five” wildlife sightings – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino – and the coin is designed to celebrate the natural wonders and cultural significance of this majestic place.

Why is the Sabi Sabi Krugerrand coin so rare?

The original plan was to mint 300 proof pieces, but only 72 were ultimately made. Therefore, this special edition has the smallest mintage of all Krugerrand coins.

Krugerrand Sabi Sabi – historical background

In 1997, South Africa celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Krugerrand with the release of the first two special editions of this already iconic coin. One issue was dedicated to Sabi Sabi while the other was a set of four gold coins denoted as the Krugerrand 1997 “30th Anniversary Edition”. Examples:

Like other Krugerrand coins, the 1997 Sabi-Sabi issue was often minted to high quality standards and features intricate designs and details. The gold used tends to come from South African mines, further cementing the coin’s connection to its home country. The Krugerrand itself has a long history: it was first minted in 1967 to help market South Africa’s gold. Over the years it has grown into an internationally recognized and trusted gold coin, and the Sabi Sabi issue is a unique, if lesser-known, chapter in its illustrious history.

The coin is also highly sought after by Krugerrand collectors, especially those with a particular interest in wildlife, nature or South African history and culture. This special Krugerrand serves not only as a form of investment but also as a keepsake to celebrate and commemorate the wonders of the African wilderness.

The 1997 Krugerrand Sabi Sabi gold coin is a double tribute to the natural beauty of South Africa and to the longstanding importance of the Krugerrand itself. Their value is multifaceted and appeals to both collectors and investors. For those who own it, the coin is a reminder of Sabi Sabi’s remarkable biodiversity and natural beauty, and symbolizes the treasure that South Africa’s rich heritage and wildlife represent.
