South Africa – 1961 – Rand – Long-Proof Set – with original blue case
Long Proof set (9 coins, from 2 Rand to ½ Cent). First part of the Decimal series. The coins retained the corresponding size of the sterling coins, but used decimal values. No equivalent to the 2/6 or ¼ d. were made. New alloys were used to mint the cent and half cent. (Ten cents = twelve pence. 100 cents = 1 rand. One rand = 10/- and two rand = 1 pound.
Issued in a blue S.A.M. (inside cover printed) oblong folding leatherette case with two clasps. These sleeves differ from previous years in that the corners are less rounded.
The gold (1R and 2R coin) is of the “red” variety (with fineness .9167).
This is the first type series of the Decimal series (issued from 1961 to 1964).
Details:
The 2 Rand has 7.32g and the 1 Rand has 3.66g of gold.
The silver coins: 0.72g; 1.41g; 2.82g; 5.65g; 14.13g.
In addition: 2 coins of copper alloys of 5.7g and 9.58g.
