The 2020 edition, featuring a rhino from the acclaimed Big Five series, comes from the South African Mint in South Africa.

The Big Five Rhino gold coin represents the third release in the “Big Five” coin collection. A quick note: The so-called “Big Five” include the animals elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. With a mintage of just 500 copies, this gold coin is particularly popular with collectors and coin fans due to its rarity.

What is unique about this Big Five coin collection is the sophisticated design of the coin reverse, which shows two parts of an animal portrait. Placing two coins together creates a full portrait of one of the Big Five animals, and a number of these coins feature a group of animals (in this case, a herd of rhinos).

Front details:

The motif on the front shows a full-grown rhino and its characteristic horns. The inscriptions “SOUTH AFRICA”, “BIG FIVE” and “2020” are placed clearly below the motif.

Back details:

The reverse contains two parts of a rhino portrait. Enclosed in a circle between these two portraits are the denomination “FIFTY RAND”, the weight “1oz” and the metal clarity “Au 999.9”.
