1994 Inauguration of Nelson Mandela – Gold Medal – Commemorative Coin Series South Africa
After the first democratic elections in South Africa, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was sworn in as President of South Africa on May 10, 1994 (today’s Freedom Day), at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. To commemorate this memorable day, only 1742 pieces of 24-karat (999.9) gold coins of one ounce were minted by the SA Mint. This coin is known as the “The Inauguration of the President”. This coin commemorates a monumental event, not only in South African history, but also in world history.
These coins were presented in plush white boxes to the various signatories who attended the actual ceremony in Pretoria. Only the heads of delegations received this coin. The other members received the silver coin.
On the obverse of this coin are depicted the Union Buildings, on the reverse the old South African coat of arms.
What makes this coin special is that it has been graded very high by the NGC with a grading of PF69 Ultra Cameo. There is none in the world at NGC that has been rated better to date. Therefore, this edition is even considered “Top Pop”. For the certificate exam.
