Information:
Alexander Nevsky (1220–1263), Prince of Novgorod, was an outstanding Russian military commander, statesman, political leader, and diplomat. Born in Pereslavl-Zelesky, his far-reaching activities are linked to one of the most difficult periods in Russian history. Northeastern and southern Russia suffered under the Tatar-Mongol yoke, while northwestern Russia was attacked by German and Swedish knights. Alexander Nevsky led the fight against the foreign invaders, and his troops defeated the Swedish army at the Neva River in 1240 and the German knights at Lake Chudskoye in 1242. In 1252, he became Grand Prince of Vladimir. Alexander Nevsky died on November 15, 1263, in Gorodets, a city on the Volga River. He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church.
