Information:
The Intercession Cathedral on the moat was built between 1555 and 1561 by the Russian architects Barma and Postnik to commemorate the victory of Ivan the Terrible over the Khanate of Kazan. Later, a tenth church was added to the nine that make up the cathedral. It was built on the same foundations and named after Basil the Blessed, who was buried nearby (hence the cathedral’s second name, Basil). The monument to Prince Dmitry Pozharsky (1578-1642) and the boyar nobleman Kuzma Minin (died 1916) was the first public monument in Russia erected in honor of the civilians who led the People’s Volunteer Corps against the Polish and Lithuanian invaders in 1612. The monument was erected in 1818 by Ivan Martos with public donations.
