History

Dionisi Mudry (1440-1502/1503) is a famous Old Russian painter, an outstanding representative of the Moscow school of painting. His iconostases and murals decorated the Cathedral of the Assumption in the Kremlin, the Assumption Monastery (Moscow), the monasteries of St. Joseph and Volokolamsky, and Paphnutyev (near Moscow). The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary of the Monastery of St. Therapontus in northern Russia is world famous for its murals by Dionisi. It took Dionisi and his two sons Vladimir and Theodosius 34 days to paint the cathedral, i.e. from August 6 to September 8, 1502. In 1989 St. Therapontus Monastery with frescoes by Dionisi was included in the UNESCO list of protected monuments.
