History
The New Hermitage (inaugurated on February 5 (17), 1852) – the first public museum of world art in Russia. By the time the Great Hermitage was completed, it became clear that it could not hold the entire collection of works that Tsarina Catherine II had begun to collect. The new Hermitage was the first building in Russia built specifically for a museum. The building was designed by the German architect Leo von Klenze 1839-1852. Later it was slightly modified by architects Vasily Stasov and Nikolai Efremov to fit the building into the existing architectural ensemble. The facade was accentuated by a grandiose portico with five-meter-high atlantes. The figures of ancient characters were carved from Serdobol granite by sculptor Alexander Terebenyev.
