Gold from Mexico

Mexican gold coins

Mexico has a rich numismatic history that is unique in the Americas. One of the oldest mints in all of the Americas is the Casa de Moneda de Mexico, or simply the Mexican Mint in German. It dates back almost five centuries to 1535. Not surprisingly, the mint has produced some impressive coins in the past and continues to do so today. Both the historical and modern coins of the Mint are very popular among collectors worldwide. The Gold Libertad and Silver Libertad are at the top of many collectors’ annual wish lists.

Gold Libertad Proof Set

Fans of Libertad gold coins love the proof sets. The set consists of five coins with a weight of:

  • 1 oz
  • 1/2 oz
  • 1/4 oz
  • 1/10 oz
  • 1/20 oz

The Libertad Gold Set coins feature the same famous designs as the silver coins and are a great option for collectors who want to admire the same design in multiple sizes.

The history of Libertad gold coins

It all started in 1982 when the Mexican Mint introduced the Libertad to investors and collectors around the world. This coin, which is on par with other bullion coins such as the American Silver Eagle and the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, is of great importance to the Mexican people. The term Libertad means “freedom” in English. The name is very appropriate, because the symbol on the reverse of the coin is Mexico’s statue of Winged Liberty, which towers over Mexico City. The obverse shows the national symbol of Mexico, an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its beak, surrounded by various seals used throughout Mexican history. Unlike most other national bullion coins, Mexican Libertads do not have legal tender, but use the special designation “onza,” which is backed by a promise from the Mexican government to pay out the value of the coin based on the weight and metal purity indicated on the coin. There are two types of Libertads: gold and silver. The coins are issued in Libertad proof sets and in brilliant uncirculated form, as well as in various sizes.

How much gold is in a Libertad coin?

First minted in 1981 in honor of Mexico’s independence, these gold libertads were originally minted from .900 fine gold. Since 1992, gold Libertads have been converted to .999 fine gold.

A very limited number of proof issues minted by the Casa de Moneda, the Mexican Mint, are issued each year to the delight of collectors around the world.

Types of gold Libertad

Gold Libertad bullion coins are issued in both proof sets and brilliant uncirculated versions. The reverse of the coin shows the Statue of Liberty of Mexico City, the obverse the national symbol of Mexico: an eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake, surrounded by various seals used throughout Mexican history.

50 Mexican pesos / Centenario

The 50 pesos gold coin from Mexico is a large Mexican gold bullion coin, also known in the market as the “Centenario“. For the first time, the Centenario was minted in 1921 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the company. The event was held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain. The Centenario was not actually intended as a means of payment. The nominal value of 50 pesos is for legal purposes only and does not refer to the actual value of the gold content.

The Centenario gold coin contains 37.5 grams (1.2057 troy ounces) of gold in an alloy of 90% gold and 10% copper. This gold coin has a diameter of 37 mm. This 50 peso gold coin was minted from 1921 to 1931 and then again from 1943 to 1947. The restrikes minted from 1949-1972 are always dated 1947.

Description of Centenario coins

The obverse of the Centenario was designed by Emilio del Moral and features the powerful image of Winged Victory (El Ángel, El Ángel de la Independencia: “The Angel of Independence”) with a laurel wreath in her raised right hand and broken chains in her left. This is a motif that was later used in the Mexican Libertad series of gold and silver coins. In the background you can see two famous Mexican volcanoes. The date 1821 on the lower left commemorates the year of Mexico’s independence, and the date stamped on the right indicates the year the coin was minted. All coins minted since 1949 are usually marked “1947”.

Minted in 1943, the coin is special because it bears the double inscription 37.5 Gr “Oro Puro”, omitting the lettering 50 pesos, but keeping the diameter of 37 mm. On the reverse of the Mexican 50 peso gold coin you can see the coat of arms of Mexico with the golden eagle sitting on a cactus and carrying a snake in its beak. One of the most striking features of this beautiful Centenario gold coin is the inscription “INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD” (translated in German as “Independence and Freedom”) on the outer edge of the coin.
