This high-quality gold coin from Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) dates from 1975 and is part of the internationally renowned WWF Conservation Series . The series was launched in the 1970s as a numismatic project for nature and species conservation and is now one of the established collecting areas for modern world gold coins. Issues with clear, iconic animal motifs and high levels of preservation are particularly sought after.
The motif depicts the leopard , one of Africa’s most distinctive predators and a central symbol of African wildlife. Within the Conservation Series, big cats are among the most visually striking and collectibly appealing motifs, possessing high recognition value both thematically and aesthetically.
This particular copy was rated MS69 by PCGS . According to the PCGS census , only two copies of this issue exist worldwide in this grade of preservation ; higher grades have not been awarded to date. This means that not only is this coin classified as a Top Pop piece , but that there is also only one other issue with this grading (hence Population 2). For advanced collectors, this combination of series, motif and census scarcity is a clearly definable quality feature.
