The 2013 American Buffalo Reverse Proof is a key piece of modern US numismatics. Issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of James Earle Fraser’s classic Buffalo nickel designs, it occupies a special position within the Buffalo series. This issue is the first ever American Buffalo in Reverse Proof, clearly distinguishing it from the regular Proof and Bullion issues.
The coin was minted at West Point in 999.9 fine gold. It contains one ounce of fine gold, weighing 31.108 grams and measuring 32.70 mm in diameter. The relatively low mintage of only 47,836 pieces further enhances its appeal to collectors within the series. The combination of its anniversary significance, reverse-proof design, and limited availability makes this year’s issue particularly attractive.
The obverse features the famous portrait of a Native American, based on a design by James Earle Fraser. The reverse depicts the powerful American bison, one of the most recognizable animal motifs in US coinage history. In the reverse proof finish, the designs appear reflective, while the surfaces have a matte finish. This creates an exceptionally high-contrast effect, clearly distinguishing it from a standard proof coin and giving the coin its distinctive visual impact.
The coin offered here has been certified by NGC with reverse PF70, achieving the highest possible grade for this type of coin. Additionally, it is housed in the attractive Buffalo Label, which perfectly complements the design of this issue. The certificate number is 5946855-001. This piece thus combines the highest condition, a significant anniversary, and one of the most iconic designs in modern American gold coinage.
