The South Africa 2022 2 oz Krugerrand Gold Proof QEII Platinum Jubilee Privy is one of the exceptionally rare modern special editions within the Krugerrand series.

In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Platinum Jubilee – 70 years since her accession to the throne in 1952. To mark this historic anniversary, a special Krugerrand series was released featuring a specially designed privy mark.

On the reverse side, above the springbok, is the three-line marking:

QEII 1952 70

It refers directly to Queen Elizabeth II, the year of her accession to the throne and her 70th anniversary on the throne.

The coin offered here is the particularly rare 2 oz Gold Proof edition .

According to Hern’s Handbook, only 50 copies.

Hern’s Handbook, one of the most important reference works for South African numismatics and especially the Krugerrand, specifies a mintage of only 50 pieces for the 2 oz QEII Platinum Jubilee Privy issue.

A separately published official mintage figure from the South African Mint for this specific 2 oz Privy variant cannot be found in publicly available documents. Therefore, we explicitly state the mintage figure as taken from Hern’s Handbook .

The current NGC Census makes this number particularly plausible. NGC has already certified a total of 46 copies of this issue:

• 43 copies in PF70 Ultra Cameo
• 3 copies in PF69 Ultra Cameo

This means that 46 of the 50 specimens mentioned by Hern’s are already recorded in the NGC Census alone.

This unusually high degree of agreement is a strong indication of the extreme rarity of the issue, although a grading census naturally cannot replace an official mintage figure.

The special Platinum Jubilee Privy

The reverse side features Coert Steynberg’s classic springbok motif. The split year 20-22 flanks the springbok, while below it is the inscription FYNGOUD 2 OZ FINE GOLD .

The additional QEII 1952 70 Privy Mark was placed above the springbok and immediately distinguishes this special edition from the regular 2 oz Krugerrand of the year 2022.

The front side features the well-known portrait of Paul Kruger after Otto Schultz and the bilingual inscription SUID-AFRIKA – SOUTH AFRICA .

NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo – Top Pop

The offered specimen has been certified by NGC with PF70 Ultra Cameo – the highest possible rating for a proof coin.

PF70 signifies a flawless proof strike according to NGC’s grading standards. The designation Ultra Cameo describes the particularly pronounced contrast between the deeply reflective fields and the matte, raised motifs.
