South Africa – 1960 – 1oz – Chamber of Mines Golden Jubilee – Gold – Brilliant Uncirculated – NGC MS67 – Cert 8402849-002
This impressive 1oz gold coin was minted in 1960 by the Transvaal and Orange Free State Chamber of Mines to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Union of South Africa (1910-1960). It is considered by experts to be one of the most important precursors to the later Krugerrand concept, as it already combines a full ounce of fine gold, the iconic springbok motif, and a clear export focus.
The obverse features two springboks, one alert, one grazing. The surrounding Afrikaans inscription, “GOUE 1910 – 1960 JUBILEUM – UNIE VAN SUID-AFRIKA,” underscores the commemorative nature of this issue and also refers to the golden jubilee of the Union. The reverse depicts the modern administrative building of the Chamber of Mines with the inscription “TRANSVAALSE EN ORANJE-VRYSTAATSE KAMER VAN MYNWESE” and the weight and fineness “1 ONS GOUD . FYNHEID 996.” This clearly demonstrates the focus on the South African mining industry and gold as a strategic resource.
With only around 2,000 pieces minted and a fineness of 996/1000, a significant portion of these medals were melted down over the decades. Therefore, exceptionally well-preserved examples are considerably rarer on the market today than many early Krugerrand issues. The piece offered here has been graded MS67 by NGC, making it one of the high-grade and particularly attractive examples of this sought-after anniversary issue. The surface displays a uniform, warm gold color with a fine luster, which allows both the architectural details and the springbok motif to stand out very clearly.
For discerning collectors of modern South African gold issues, this Chamber of Mines coin is an ideal addition to early Krugerrand holdings. It documents the numismatic development towards the 1oz bullion coin and combines historical significance with a distinctive, easily recognizable design. Thus, this piece is not only an aesthetic highlight in any collection, but also an important component for anyone wishing to fully understand the Krugerrand’s history.
