South Africa – 1968 – Krugerrand – 1oz Gold Proof – NGC PF66 Cameo
This 1968 South African Krugerrand is an early proof issue from the series’ initial phase, making it particularly interesting from both a historical and numismatic point of view. At the same time, 1968 represents a period when proof Krugerrands were specifically produced for collectors, resulting in significantly more limited market availability than later years. Finally, for many collectors, the 1968 issue is a classic among the early proof years immediately following the series’ launch.
The obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger with the bilingual inscription SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The reverse presents the springbok as a national symbol; the animal also divides the year, while the inscription indicates the weight of the gold. In proof quality, the interplay of mirrored fields and matte relief areas appears particularly elegant, with the cameo marking further emphasizing the contrast.
This specimen is certified by NGC with PF66 Cameo. This objectively guarantees its collector quality and also confirms the attractive cameo contrast effect.
