Panama – 1976 – 500 Balboas – Birth of Balboa – First Day of Minting – COA

The Panama 500 Balboas coin, minted in 1976 by the Franklin Mint, is a commemorative issue celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Panamanian Peninsula. Birthday of Balboa. With a mintage of only 2,669, this coin is a rare and sought-after collector’s item.

The coin is made of .900 fine gold, weighs 41.7 g and measures 46 mm in diameter.

The obverse of the coin features the coat of arms of the Republic of Panama as well as the words “REPUBLICA DE PANAMA”, “PRO MUNDI BENEFICIO” and “FM” for Franklin Mint. The lettering also indicates the fineness and weight of the gold, as well as its value of 500 balboas.

The reverse of the coin features a depiction of Vasco Nunez de Balboa, the famous explorer of the Pacific Ocean, kneeling in armor and holding a sword in one hand and a flag in the other. The reverse also features the Latin inscription “VASCO NUÑEZ DE BALBOA DESCUBRIDOR DEL PACIFICO” and the year 1976.
