Mexico – 1969 – Apollo 11 Gold Medal – PCGS MS65

Front: Facing busts of Collins, Armstrong, and Aldrin in spacesuits; view of the moon in the background
Reverse side: Eagle with raised wing left on the lunar surface ; the Earth some distance in the background.

This is a rare medal that appears to be unrelated to any country or mint, but this type is attributed to Mexico. The reverse design, used as a symbol of the Apollo 11 mission, was later used in the United States on the reverse of the Eisenhower and Susan B. Anthony dollars.

The gold medal weighs 41.79g and has a diameter of 40mm.

This edition was certified MS65 by PCGS and is the highest certified medal in the PCGS census and therefore also a top pop.

Coin or medal – at first glance, many pieces seem very similar, but for collectors, this distinction is of central importance. It significantly influences how an object is professionally classified, its perceived value, and its place in a carefully curated collection. In our article “Medals vs. Coins – The Clear Difference for Collectors,” we explain step by step how to reliably identify both categories and why face value, mint, and issuing authority play such a crucial role.

If you would like to understand in more detail how your own pieces should be classified and what this means in everyday life when building, buying and selling your collection, you will find all the background information, examples and practical explanations in the full article on our website.
