Front of the Krugerrand coins :

The obverse of the Krugerrand gold coin depicts the world-famous portrait of Paul Kruger, after whom the series of Krugerrand coins was named. Paul Kruger, then President of South Africa (1883 to 1902), founded the mint from which the South African Mint originated. On the edge of the coin, the issuing country was stamped in English and Afrikaans.

Reverse of the Krugerrand coins :

The reverse of the Krugerrand gold coin depicts a springbok motif with a stylized South African steppe landscape in the background. Likewise, the fine weight of the coin, the fineness and the precious metal are depicted on the obverse of the coin.

History of the Krugerrand Veldpond :

A collection of the Krugerrand-Veldpond was created between 1902 and 2002, commemorating the closure of the mint after the British takeover of Pretoria in 1900. The “Veldponde”, made in the wild, were replacements for the citizens’ sovereigns. These coins with the horse motif were particularly popular with the locals. However, only 986 of these coins were minted.

Description:

The 1902 gold Veldpond, also known as the “Pilgrim’s Rest Coin”, was minted by the Boers while they were fleeing the British. It was created in Pilgrims Rest, now Mpumalanga. It is similar to the pre-war German East African coins. For coin collectors, the Veld Pond is particularly valuable because of its history and rarity, especially in a set with a Veldpond commemorative medal.

KRUGER COIN – TSAR Era (1892-1902):

In 1890/91 the ZAR National Bank was allowed to open a mint in Pretoria. These coins should meet British standards. The 1892 coins from Berlin had an error in the coat of arms, which was later corrected. Otto Schultz placed his initials (OS) under Paul Kruger’s bust, visible only on certain versions. Kruger’s image has adorned the Krugerrand since 1967. Paul Kruger would have celebrated his 200th birthday on October 10, 2025. Celebrated birthday.
