History
It is generally accepted that the Internal Troops came into being on March 27, 1811, when military battalions were formed by a decree of Tsar Alexander to “preserve peace and tranquility in the state.”
The Inner Guard assisted the authorities in enforcing laws and court sentences, apprehending robbers, guarding criminals and the treasury, and maintaining order at fairs, trades, and public and church festivals.
Today, internal troops ensure the territorial integrity of the state and, in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, provide for the protection of public order and the fight against international terrorism.
