History

Alexei Semenovich Shein (1662-1700), boyar, the first Russian generalissimo, an outstanding statesman and military leader, collaborator of Peter I in the reform of Russia. He began his service with the rank of stolnik at the court of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, and then was appointed governor of Tobolsk and Kursk. During the Crimean campaigns in 1687 and 1689 he commanded the subdivisions of the military. Besides his military activity, A. S. Shein was one of the judges of the Moscow Judicial Department in the 1680s. During the conspiracy of Tsarevna Sofia in 1689 A. Shein sided with Peter Alekseevich and since then took part in all campaigns and undertakings of the young tsar. During the Azov campaign in 1695 Alexei Semenovich was appointed one of the most important voivodes (voivode is a Slavic army commander or ruler title) of the Russian army. In 1696, he led the second Azov campaign, which resulted in the capture of Azov Fortress and opened Russia’s access to the sea. In 1697, under his command, the Russian army stopped the Crimean Khan’s army, which was engaged against Germany, Russia’s ally. In the same year, the Russian army under the command of A.S. Shein defeated the Turkish army at the Kagalnik River, which moved to Azov. With this victory, Shein finally subdued Nogai and Tatars inhabiting the Kuban, secured Russia’s conquests in the southern territories, and contributed to the end of the Russo-Turkish War and the conclusion of the Peace Treaty of Constantinople.

In the last years of his life he headed the Inozemny, Pushkarsky and Reitarsky orders, which corresponded to the status of the commander-in-chief of the Russian state. Died on February 12, 1700. Shein is buried in the Trinity Sergius Lavra (also the Troice Sergiev Monastery or Troize Sergiev Monastery (Russian Свято-Троицкая Сергиева лавра or Троице-Сергиева лавра).
