Who is John M. Mercanti

John M. Mercanti, born in 1943, is an esteemed American sculptor and engraver who served as the United States Mint ‘s twelfth Chief Engraver until his retirement in 2010. Mercanti is considered the most renowned coin engraver of modern times and is best known for his design of the reverse of the popular American Silver Eagle coin.

During his impressive 36-year tenure at the U.S. Mint, which spanned from 1974 to 2010, Mercanti displayed remarkable productivity. He designed well over 100 coins and medals, surpassing any other employee in the history of the U.S. Mint. Many of his creations have become icons and are highly sought after by collectors of modern U.S. coins.

His notable contributions include designing the obverse of the American Platinum Eagle, which has been used for all four denominations since the program’s inception in 1997. He also designed eight commemorative coins, including the 1984 Olympic Games gold coin ($10), the 1986 Statue of Liberty silver coin ($1), the 1989 Congressional Bicentennial gold coin ($5), and several others.

In addition, Mercanti played a key role in the 50 State Quarters Program, for which he adapted designs for five states: Arkansas, Iowa, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

At the U.S. Mint medals, he was involved in the design of several Congressional Gold Medals, the 1989 President George H.W. Bush Inaugural Medal, the reverse of the 1991 Persian Gulf War Medal, and the 1992 White House Bicentennial Medal.

Even after his retirement from the U.S. Mint, Mercanti continued to be actively involved in the field of numismatics. In 2014, he designed an Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle for the Perth Mint, which now appears in an annual series of silver and gold coins.
