John M. Mercanti

The Career of John M. Mercanti

John M. Mercanti, born in 1943, is one of the most renowned American sculptors and engravers. As the twelfth chief engraver of the United States Mint, he had a significant impact on the industry until his retirement in 2010.

Influential works

Mercanti is particularly known for its iconic design of the reverse of the American Silver Eagle coin. During his impressive 36-year career at the U.S. Mint, he designed over 100 coins and medals, including some of the most iconic pieces in modern U.S. mint history.

Milestones and contributions

His most notable creations include the obverse design of the American Platinum Eagle and eight commemorative coins, including the 1984 Olympic Games gold coin and the 1986 Statue of Liberty silver coin.

Role in the 50 State Quarters Program

Mercanti played a critical role in designing coins for the 50 State Quarters Program, adapting the designs for five states. In addition, he was involved in the development of several important medals.

Ongoing commitment

Even after leaving the US Mint, Mercanti remained actively involved in numismatics. His contribution to the Perth Mint in 2014 with the design of the Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle is another example of his continued influence in the industry.

In our shop we currently offer two unique coins that have been personally hand-signed by John Mercanti and graded by PCGS:
