What are “First Releases”?
The NGC designation First Releases is given to coins that arrive at NGC within the first 30 days after the official release date. In contrast to the “First Day of Issue”, the period here is significantly more generous, allowing more copies to receive this designation.
First-release coins are also recorded separately in the NGC census and are eligible for registration. For many collectors, they represent a good compromise between early issue attribution and wider availability.
First Struck (NGC) and First Strike (PCGS)
The term “First Struck” at NGC refers to coins that are demonstrably among the first actually minted examples of an issue. The prerequisite is official documentation from the mint, showing that these coins come from the very first production phase.
In these cases, the NGC label often additionally indicates how many coins belong to this early minting group, for example, with inscriptions such as “One of First 600 Struck”. This designation is only available for selected, documented consignments.
The comparable program at PCGS is called First Strike . This section marks coins that were delivered by the mint within a specified period after the start of issue. Both terms are perceived similarly in the market, but are based on different definitions by the respective grading organizations.
