The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle gold coin from the United States Mint is among the most impressive modern US gold issues. It takes the legendary Saint-Gaudens design of the Double Eagle and translates it into a technically sophisticated ultra-high relief minting. This creates an exceptionally three-dimensional effect that clearly distinguishes this issue from classic standard coins.

The obverse depicts Liberty with a torch and olive branch, striding before a rising sun. The year appears in Roman numerals as “MMIX”. Fifty stars are also incorporated, corresponding to the current 50 states of the USA.

The reverse side depicts a flying bald eagle against a backdrop of sunbeams. The inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “TWENTY DOLLARS,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Particularly appealing is the raised, medallion-like effect of the design, which reinterprets Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ historical concept using modern minting techniques.

This coin has been certified MS69 by PCGS. This places it in a very high grade of preservation, just one point below the theoretically highest grade of MS70. Furthermore, the coin is made of 1 oz of .9999 fine gold and was minted at West Point, although it lacks a visible mint mark.
