With the American Eagle in gold, the United States Mint created one of the world’s most famous modern gold coins, beginning in 1986. The 1987 edition offered here is therefore one of the early proof years of this important series and combines the official character of a US gold coin with the more elaborate collector’s edition of proof. The coin was minted at West Point and bears the mint mark W. The mintage of the 1-ounce proof coin from 1987 was 147,498 pieces.

The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ famous depiction of Liberty with a torch and olive branch before a rising sun. This motif is one of the classic icons of American coinage and lends the Gold Eagle series its particularly prestigious character. The reverse shows the series’ original eagle design with a male eagle in flight above the nest containing a female eagle and chicks. The early proof issues featuring this classic family eagle remain highly sought after by collectors to this day.

The coin is made of a durable 22-karat gold alloy with a fine gold content of 1 ounce. Its gross weight is 33.931 g, and its diameter is 32.70 mm.
