South Africa – Krugerrand – 1977 – 1 oz Gold Proof – Coarse Reeding – NGC PF68 Cameo

A rare coarse reeding variety from the transition year of 1977. In that year, the South African Mint gradually switched to fine reeding , which is why a small number of proof pieces with the old coarse reeding were still issued. This specimen was graded PF 68 Cameo by NGC. The NGC Census lists only four examples in PF 68 Cameo , and only one example graded higher .

Variety note: Coarse Reeding 1977

Up to and including 1976, proof Krugerrands typically feature coarse reeding . The transition to fine reeding began in 1977 , but apparently some batches still used the older reeding (collar) . This transitional period explains the rare “coarse reeding ” variant found in the 1977 proof year. NGC recognizes this variety and explicitly includes it on the label.

Numismatic classification

Transitional varieties are particularly sought after in the Krugerrand region, as they document production changes and simultaneously represent a small recorded population. PF 68 Cameo combines the rare edge variety with excellent preservation, making this piece a compelling choice for variety- and quality-oriented collections.
