This gold coin from Sierra Leone was minted in 1966 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of independence and bears the period 1961-1966 directly in the coin’s design. This gives the issue a clear historical context, while at the same time making it appear particularly high-quality and collector-oriented as a classic proof coin.

The front features the inscription FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE with the years 1961-1966 , and a striking lion’s head dominates as a powerful symbolic motif. The reverse side shows the map of Sierra Leone with the inscription SIERRA LEONE and the characteristic legend LAND OF IRON AND DIAMONDS , while below it is shown the denomination 1/4 GOLDE .

This specimen was graded PF69 Cameo by NGC . This results in a near-perfect proof coin, where the cameo contrast with mirrored fields and matte reliefs is particularly striking.

This is also a Top Pop coin; no other issue has received a higher certification from the NGC to date. There is only one other coin with this very high certification grade.
