Overview:

On the anniversary of Rhodesia’s Declaration of Independence, November 11, 1966, the Reserve Bank of Rhodesia released special gold coins. This collection includes coins in denominations of 5 pounds, 1 pound and 10 shillings.

Manufactured in the renowned South African Mint in Pretoria, these coins are characterized by an impressive fineness of 916,666 thousandths and are manufactured in the high-quality “Proof” minting method. Another notable detail is the milled edge of each coin.

Design:

Obverse : The obverse features a portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, looking to the right, adorned with a magnificent tiara. The portrait is surrounded by the inscription “Elizabeth the Second”.

Back:

  • The £5 coin features the impressive coat of arms of Rhodesia.
  • The £1 piece features an imposing lion with a tusk – a symbol taken from the coat of arms of the former British South Africa Company.
  • The 10 shilling coin features an image of the sable antelope (Hippotragus niger).
