With the 500 Balboas gold coin of 1976, the Republic of Panama commemorates the 500th anniversary of Vasco Núñez de Balboa’s birth. Balboa is considered the namesake of the Panamanian currency and an important historical figure in the exploration of the Pacific. This commemorative issue is designed accordingly.

The coin is made of 900 gold and weighs 41.7 g, resulting in a pure gold content of approximately 37.5 g. With a diameter of about 46 millimeters, the coin has a substantial feel in the hand and displays the design in great detail. The Franklin Mint minted only 2669 coins in proof quality for this year.

One side features the coat of arms of the Republic of Panama with the inscription “Republica de Panama” and the motto “Pro Mundi Beneficio” (For the Benefit of the World). Information regarding the face value and gold content is also included. The other side depicts Vasco Núñez de Balboa in armor with a flag and sword, surrounded by a legend commemorating the anniversary.

The proof-quality minting creates reflective fields and a matte relief, resulting in a clearly visible Ultra Cameo contrast. In NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo condition, this particular coin shows virtually no noticeable signs of wear and is especially suitable for collectors of large-format commemorative gold coins with historical significance.
