Niger 1968 – 50 Francs Gold Proof with lions

This 50 Francs gold coin from 1968 belongs to a four-part proof series from Niger, whose motifs depict the country’s first president and characteristic animals of the African fauna.

The obverse features a lion in a stylized landscape. The animal occupies a large portion of the image and is framed by the inscription “REPUBLIQUE DU NIGER”. The classic lion motif makes this 50-franc coin one of the most distinctive issues in the series.

The other side shows the coat of arms of the Republic of Niger . Above it is the face value of 50 francs, below it the year 1968. The inscription bears the national motto “FRATERNITE – TRAVAIL – PROGRES”.

Gold Proof with a mintage of only 1,000

The 50 Francs gold coin weighs 16.00 g and has a fineness of .900 gold . This results in a pure gold weight of 14.40 g or approximately 0.463 oz .

The mintage is limited to only 1,000 . The coin was minted by Valcambi SA in Balerna, Switzerland .

NGC PF68 Ultra Cameo – only 7 coins of this grade

The coin offered here has been certified by NGC as PF68 Ultra Cameo . Even within the NGC population, this grading is rare: currently only 7 coins are registered as PF68 Ultra Cameo, and only 2 coins have been graded higher.

The addition of Ultra Cameo refers to the particularly strong contrast between the frosted motifs and the deeply reflective fields of the proof embossing.

The low mintage, the attractive lion motif and the very small NGC population make this 50 Francs Gold Proof a particularly interesting issue of the four-part gold series from 1968.
