The 1981 Mexican Libertad Gold PCGS MS67 is an early and particularly collector-relevant issue of the modern Mexican gold Libertad series. The year 1981 marks the starting point of this series and is therefore considered a key date within the modern gold Libertad issues. At the same time, this 1-onza gold coin combines the classic Mexican symbolism of the Libertad with a fine gold content of one troy ounce.

The obverse depicts the winged Victoria, known as Libertad , against a backdrop of the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes. This design incorporates one of the most iconic motifs in Mexican numismatics. The reverse features the Mexican coat of arms with an eagle, snake, and cactus, along with the inscription “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” (United Mexican States). This iconic design, among other things, makes the Gold Libertad one of the most internationally recognized modern gold coins from Latin America.

This particular example is especially interesting due to its PCGS certification of MS67 . This places the coin significantly above the usual collector standard for early gold Libertad issues. According to the PCGS Population Report, 47 examples are currently listed as MS67 , while only 12 have actually been graded higher .

Furthermore, the coin has a gross weight of 34.5585 g and a fineness of .900 gold . This results in a fine gold content of 31.103 g, or one full troy ounce of gold. The combination of being a first issue, featuring the classic Libertad design, PCGS certification, and in excellent condition makes this coin particularly interesting for collectors of modern Mexican gold coins .
