Costa Rica – 1974 – 1500 Colones – Anteater – Gold – Uncirculated – MS68 – Conservation Series – NGC Cert 8470784-002
This gold coin from Costa Rica, minted in 1974, is part of the renowned international Conservation Series of the 1970s. The series is dedicated to the protection of endangered animal species and is now one of the classic collecting areas of modern gold numismatics with a clear thematic focus.
The front side shows the coat of arms of the Republic of Costa Rica with a mountain landscape, rising sun and ships on both seas. The inscription “REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA” and the date 1974 give the coin its official character as a state gold coin.
The reverse side depicts a giant anteater in a resting position, surrounded by stylized vegetation. The inscription “AMERICA CENTRAL” refers to the animal’s natural habitat, supplemented by the denomination 1500 COLONES . The motif exemplifies the calm, nature-inspired design style of the Conservation Series.
This issue was minted in brilliant uncirculated quality . The present specimen has been certified by NGC with MS68 and is therefore one of the exceptionally well-preserved pieces of this issue. Only a few specimens of this high preservation grade are available on the market, especially in direct comparison to the much more common average circulated condition.
The mint condition edition has a mint edition of 2,418 copies , making this variant more common than the proof edition, but in high mint condition it still has a sophisticated collector’s quality. The coins were minted at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant (United Kingdom) , as documented for numerous Conservation issues of this period.
By combining a classic 1970s design, high gold content and a strong MS68 grading, this coin represents an attractive alternative to the proof edition and is particularly suitable for collectors who value substance and high condition.
