Description

This 100-franc gold issue from 1965 commemorates the fifth anniversary of the independence of the Democratic Republic of the Congo . The present example was struck in proof quality and graded PR65CAM by PCGS. The distinct cameo contrast between matte reliefs and mirrored fields emphasizes the artistic depth of the depiction. The obverse features President Joseph Kasa-Vubu, while the reverse depicts the elephant – a symbol of strength and national identity.
Since many of these coins were later melted down, surviving pieces in high condition are now among the most sought-after rarities of African commemorative coins from the 1960s.
