Design:

All four coins are made of 99.99% pure gold and share the same maple leaf design by Canadian artist Nathalie Lagacé. The leaves of the sugar maple (Acer saccharum) are superimposed in a botanical representation, allowing the fine engravings in the reverse proof finish to be shown off to their best advantage. Each coin is stamped with the inscription “40 YEARS – ANS” and the double dates “1979” and “2019” to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Gold Maple Leaf (GML). The 1-ounce coin features another special feature: an edge inscription with the date “05.09.79”, the day of the official launch of the Gold Maple Leaf (GML). In addition, the first-ever use of transparent green enamel showcases the leaves in a vibrant shade. The obverse of each coin features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Arnold Machin, as seen on the first GML in 1979.
