This 300-Cruzeiros gold coin was issued by the South American state of Brazil in 1972 – on the occasion of the 150. Anniversary of Independence from the Portuguese colonial empire in 1822.
The obverse depicts bust portraits of two central figures in Brazilian history: Dom Pedro I , the country’s first emperor, and Emílio Garrastazu Médici , who was president at the time of the coin’s issue. Both portraits are depicted facing right, surrounded by the inscription “Sesquicentenario da Independencia.” The reverse features a modern, abstracted motif of a sunburst over the map of Brazil —a symbol of national unity and hope.
The coin is made of .920 gold , weighs 16.65 g , resulting in a fine gold content of approximately 15.32 g .
