History
A miniature book depicting an angel, the symbol of the Evangelist Matthew, one of the illustrations for the Chitrovo Gospel, created by Andrei Rublev. The old handwritten copy of the Chitrovo Gospel was kept in the Trinity-Sergius-Lawra until 1920 and is now in the Russian State Library.
Andrei Rublev (1360–1428) was the first Russian artist to be canonized as an Orthodox saint. He founded his own school of iconography and departed from the Byzantine canon of art. In addition to icons, Rublev also created murals for churches and worked as a book illustrator.
