In the center of the disc the emblem of the Bank of Russia (double-headed eagle with wings down, below it the semicircular inscription “Bank of Russia”), framed by a circle of dots and inscriptions on the edge: above – “Hundred rubles”, below – “2004”. On the left you can see the description of the metal and its fineness, on the right – fineness of the metal and the mark of the mint.

History

The Great Northern Expedition (also known as the 2nd Kamchatka Expedition) is a series of geographical expeditions by Russian explorers along the Arctic coast of Siberia to the coasts of North America and Japan. The first of nine expeditions took place in 1733, the last in 1743.

The expedition was initiated by Vitus Bering (1681-1741). Vitus Bering was a sailor and captain who was born and raised in Denmark. His whole further life he was connected with Russia.
