Kemine (real name Mammadveli) was born around 1770 in Serakhs and was a Turkmen poet. He was educated at an Islamic madrassa in Bukhara. Throughout his life he was a very modest man, which earned him the popular nickname Kemine (humble), which later became his creative pseudonym. He wrote satirical poems, but also love poetry. Only about 40 poems from his oeuvre have survived to this day, mainly in oral form. The popularity of Kemine’s poems and his personality made the poet the hero of a series of oral folk tales. Almost every major city in Turkmenistan has a street named after Kemine.

Monuments to the poet were erected in many of the country’s major cities, both during the Soviet era and after Turkmenistan gained independence in 1991.

Seyitnazar Seidi (real name Seyitnazar Habib-Khoja Oglu), who lived at the turn of XVIII and XIX centuries and continued the best poetic traditions of Makhtumkuli Fraghi, a classic of Turkmen literature, has left an invaluable creative heritage, which includes lyrical, heroic and patriotic works, as well as moral teachings. The poet and brave military commander was also known as a storyteller and connoisseur of Turkmen folklore. The art and radiant destiny of Seyitnazar Seidi is of interest to literary scholars and lovers of the art word. The grateful descendants of his native village near the fortress Soltanniyaz-Bega, which is called “Seydi Fortress” by the locals, erected a monument in honor of their heroic compatriot.

More poets

Turkmen poet and patriot Mollanepes (1810 – 1862) – Mollanepes wrote the famous dastan “Zohra and Tahir”, based on a folk tale about the love between the shah’s daughter Zohra and a young man named Tahir. He wrote many love songs: “Beloved”, “We are well together”, “There and here”, “Forget not!” and others.

Makhtumkuli Fraghi – Turkmen poet, a classic of Turkmen literature. He was the son of the poet Azadi Dovletmamed. Mahtumkuly was born in the village of Hadji Govshan in the valley of the Atrek River with its tributaries Sumbar and Cendir in northern Iran, in the foothills of the Kopetdag Mountains, where Turkmen of different tribes lived. His family belonged to the Kishyk tribe of the Herkez tribe, a branch of the Goklen tribe, a sedentary farming tribe subordinate to the Persian rulers. The poet chose a pseudonym, Fragi, when he grew up. At the end of each poem he put this pseudonym, sometimes his real name, as if he meant himself. He was in the tradition of the poetry of his time.

Zelili Kurbandurdy (Gurbandurdy Zelili, 1790-1844) was a classical Turkmen poet. He received his primary education in the Aul school, then in the Shirgazi-khan madrasah in Khiva and in the “Madrasah of Geoklen”. At the Shirgazi-khan Madrassah he met the poet and military leader Seyidnazar Seidi, with whom he became close friends. He wrote patriotic and socially critical poems and love poetry.

Annagylich Myatadji (1822-1884) was a Turkmen poet and patriot. He was engaged in viticulture. Myatadji knew well the works of folk poetry and literature of the Central Asian peoples. He wrote poems on everyday subjects and depicted images from nature. His handwritten legacy has not been preserved. His orally distributed works have become part of the repertoire of Bakhshi songs of folk singers. About 40 of his poems were recorded during the Soviet period.
