History of Burgers Pond

In 1874, two native currencies were introduced in South Africa, ending the exclusive use of British currency. In East Griqualand, Strachan and Company issued trademarks that served as currency on the East Coast for over half a century. At the same time, the President of the South African Republic, Thomas François Burgers, commissioned gold coins called “Burgers Pond” in the northern region. Although these coins were the first of their kind, they were never put into circulation. Burgers, a former priest with liberal views, became the fourth President of the Republic in 1872. In response to long-standing demands for a local currency, he minted gold coins in England in 1874 that resembled the English pound and featured his portrait and the Republic’s coat of arms. Due to a die change that changed the appearance of Burger’s beard, two batches were produced, the “fine beard” and “coarse beard” variants. However, when the coins were presented to the Volksraad, the Republic’s parliament, they were rejected and criticized as a vanity project. As a result, these coins became rare souvenirs, often converted into jewelry or ornaments.
