Description

Costa Rica – 1974 – 1500 Colones – Anteater – Gold – Proof – PF69 Ultra Cameo – Conservation Series – NGC Cert 8470784-004

This gold coin from Costa Rica is one of the classic issues of the international Conservation Series of the 1970s. The series aims to make endangered animal species and their habitats visible through numismatics, thereby combining aesthetic design and collectability in a particularly compelling way.

The front side shows the coat of arms of the Republic of Costa Rica with a mountain landscape, rising sun and ships on the sea. The inscription “REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA” and the date 1974 clearly classify the issue and underline its official character as a state gold coin.

The reverse side depicts a giant anteater in a resting position. The design is accompanied by the inscription “AMERICA CENTRAL”, and the face value 1500 COLOMES is clearly placed below the animal. This edition is therefore stylistically exemplary for the Conservation Series and at the same time appears unusually three-dimensional and calm in its composition.

Minted in proof quality , the coin impresses with mirrored fields and finely matte relief areas with pronounced contrast. This specimen has been certified by NGC with PF69 Ultra Cameo and therefore represents an exceptionally high minting quality with a strong optical effect.

Of particular relevance is the limited proof edition of 726 copies , which makes proof copies of this edition significantly rarer than the regular version. The coins were minted at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant (United Kingdom) , which is typical for numerous conservation issues of this era.
