History

Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol (1809-1852) is one of the most important Russian writers of the first half of the 19th century. He is known as a prose writer: He wrote novels and engaged in drama. He also dabbled in professional criticism. With very few exceptions, Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol’s texts are permeated with mystical elements. The theme of evil forces, the supernatural, occupied a central place in the writer’s work. In addition, Gogol worked on the development of the image of the “little man”, had a subtle sense of humor, accurately noted the vices of Russian society of the historical period. Many of the author’s colleagues had a high opinion of his work. The writer Alexander Pushkin and the poet Vasily Zhukovsky read works by Gogol. The writer lived a rather complicated life, full of challenges and difficulties. In the last phase of his life he was seriously ill and suffered from a number of mental disorders.
