This 2023-W American Gold Eagle is a high-quality proof coin from the United States Mint, made of 1 oz of pure gold. Minted at West Point, it bears the “W” mintmark. As a modern collector’s item, it combines the classic Liberty design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens with the new eagle portrait on the reverse, introduced in 2021.
The front depicts Liberty with a torch and olive branch against a backdrop of sunbeams. The year 2023 and the inscription “LIBERTY” are integrated into the classic design. The image appears particularly high-contrast and three-dimensional in the proof version.
The reverse features a detailed portrait of a bald eagle’s head. This is complemented by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “50 DOLLARS,” and “1 OZ. FINE GOLD.” The 1-oz coin also features the milled edge with security element introduced in 2021.
This example has been certified by NGC with the highest grade PF70 Ultra Cameo. This means the coin is in perfect proof condition. Additionally, the holder bears the inscription “First Day of Issue” and a hand-signed label by David J. Ryder, the 34th and 39th directors of the United States Mint.
