This rare gold coin from Swaziland was issued in 1968 to commemorate the independence of the Kingdom of Swaziland. The obverse depicts King Sobhuza II, who ruled the country during the independence period. The reverse shows the national coat of arms with a lion and elephant, above which is the denomination “One Lilangeni” and below it the year of issue, 1968.

This issue is particularly interesting because it was not minted as a classic investment coin, but as a historical gold proof coin with numismatic significance. The coin is made of 917 gold, weighs approximately 33.93 grams, and thus contains about one ounce of pure gold. The mintage was limited to only 2,000 proof pieces. This makes the 1968 1 Lilangeni one of the rarer gold issues from Africa.

This coin has been certified by NGC with PF66 Ultra Cameo . The certification confirms its proof condition and the strong contrast between the mirrored field and the frosted motifs. A certified condition with an ultra-cameo effect is particularly attractive to collectors, especially for historical proof gold coins from smaller issuing countries.

The Swaziland 1968 1 Lilangeni Independence coin combines several strong collecting themes: African gold coins, independence issues, King Sobhuza II, low mintage, and certified proof condition. An exciting coin for collectors seeking rare, modern gold numismatics beyond the well-known standard issues.
