This exceptional 5 Pound gold coin from the Isle of Man, issued in 2020, commemorates the 180th anniversary of the Penny Black. The Penny Black, first issued in 1840, is considered the world’s first official postage stamp. This issue thus combines modern numismatics with one of the most recognizable symbols in international postal history.

The obverse features the famous Penny Black with the portrait of Queen Victoria. The combination of 1 oz of fine gold, selective ruthenium plating, and ultra-high-relief embossing is particularly striking. The dark areas deliberately evoke the historical “black” stamp, while the golden relief elements stand out with remarkable three-dimensionality.

The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription “Queen Elizabeth II – Isle of Man” and the year 2020. The portrait was designed by Raphael Maklouf, whose signature also appears on the special NGC label.

This coin has been certified by NGC as PF70 Ultra Cameo, the highest grade for a proof coin. The Ultra Cameo designation describes the strong contrast between the mirrored surfaces and the frosted motifs.
